I’ve no idea what was wrong with the application, but running Contact Cleaner, and addressing every problem it found, restored normal functionality. NONE seemed serious, but after I’d worked through the entire list, Contacts started functioning normally again. There were duplications, incorrect phone-number formats, spaces in names, etc. In desperation I turned to Contact Cleaner. Nothing I tried helped, and I’d have thought of trying to uninstall and reinstall, but Contacts is not an app that can be uninstalled. After entering a new name and company, I’d get mostly through the phone number when the new-contact form would suddenly be replaced by what would have been the next contact alphabetically, and it oepned this new form in Editing mode for some reason. I had less than 400 contacts, but in macOS High Sierra (not in any iOS device, though), I suddenly found that I couldn’t add new contacts. I encountered a horrible problem with Contacts. Overall, not as helpful as I was hoping.įixed what appeared to be a database corruption Every “single name” error also produced “Shared Email” errors. In reality, most of the problems it found were problems of its own making. numbers, I sometimes put spaces in the First Name field (Andy & Joan) etc. It said phone numbers were poorly formmated, partially because I put “+1” at the beginning of U.S. I have a number of single name contact entries nothing to “fix”. None of the other issues it identifies were issues I wanted it to “fix”. When I did that (select both, Cmd-Shift-L), this app stopped seeing them as duplicates. What really needed to happen is for the Contacts app to Link the duplicates between the two accounts. This app wanted to “delete the duplicates”. In my use case, I keep duplicates of many contacts in a Gmail account I share with my partner. There was only one thing I let it do for me and otherwise used the analysis to guide my cleanup tasks, but only because it gave a little more information than the native app does and let me see things side by side more easily. For what the use I got it wasn’t worth the $5.
